Thin, sgraffito strokes are etched into a layer of blue paint which had been glazed over pink, yellow, and green brushstrokes, delineating a simple, logographic symbol of the artist's facial features. Three small birds—perhaps sparrows—are sketched over the lower half of his face using the same technique, while zigzagging strokes and scribbles evoke a patch of grass along the lower edge of the image. The artist's face is flanked by columns of pseudo-calligraphic forms.
