With impasto black brushstrokes applied using a thin brush, the artist creates tonal gradations within a dense, teeming mass made up of small daubs of paint and brief, broken contoured hatch lines, forming his facial features in this semi-abstract, close-up, frontal self portrait. Loose, dry, gestural brushstrokes frame the artist's face. The image dissolves into abstraction when viewed up close.

Holes and a trail of brown stains near the top edge. Remounted onto a new stretcher. Tears along the top side of the canvas and at the bottom right corner. Brown stains around the brushstrokes and on the reverse due to the oils (or other constituents) in the medium used seeping through the canvas. Holes along the edges of the canvas (see reverse) where it was previously nailed into the stretcher.
