Description
-
A semi-abstract portrait of the artist facing front with his torso unclothed and his face reduced to a shadowy mass of brief, broken, contour hatch lines and small daubs of paint applied using a fine, slender brush. Loose, gestural, dry brushstrokes surround his face, emanating outwards like wild strands of hair; behind him is a vaguely rectangular form. His body, in contrast, is partially shaded, with multiple, uncertain outlines that imbue the image with a sense of movement and indeterminacy.

Tears along the top edge; brown lines around the tear. Holes along the edges of the canvas (see reverse) where it was previously nailed into the stretcher. A crease across the centre of the canvas which suggests that it was previously unmounted and folded. Brown stains around some strokes due to the oils (or other constituents) in the medium used seeping through the canvas. Some stains within the image corresponding to the inscription on the reverse. Brown liquid stains (see top and bottom edges).
