Description
-
In this semi-abstract, close-up, frontal self-portrait, parts of the artist's face—namely his left eye, his nose bridge, and his lips—are described using brief, broken, contour hatch lines. The other parts of his face, however, are briefly delineated, with thin strokes brushed lightly over the canvas in outward-facing sweeps, resulting in an image which wavers between figuration and abstraction.

A cluster of small holes and a trail of brown spots near the top edge. Brown stains around some brushstrokes due to the oil (or other constituents) in the medium used seeping through the canvas. Dust and dirt. Blue stains at the top left corner. Loose threads (see reverse). Staples used to secure the canvas to the stretcher have rusted. A small hole along the left edge. Holes along the edges of the canvas (on the reverse) where it was previously nailed into the stretcher. Brown liquid stains (lower half of the work). Nails along the left and right sides of the work.
