Description
-
With slender, expressive, sketchily blended brushstrokes painted alla prima, the artist captures a likeness of his elderly mother as she faces the viewer straight-on, her eyes closed, lips pursed, and brows furrowed in concentration. Painted in warm reds and yellows, over a solid red backdrop, with partial outlines suggesting the contours of her frail shoulders. The image is framed by squares of gold leaf, recalling the Thai Buddhist practice of gilding temple images with gold as a measure of respect and devotion.

Inscriptions
-
At the bottom right corner of the image is a vague inscription resembling the artist's Chinese name "陈壮".

Condition
-
Holes in the canvas. The edges of the canvas are uneven and damaged, though this may have been the artist's intention. Bits of the gold leaf have flaked off the frame and onto the canvas. Top right corner of the canvas peeling off from the MDF board. Nails on the left and right sides of the frame.
