Description
-
A front-facing, naturalistically proportioned portrait of the artist's head rendered in thin, densely layered, broken strokes of vivid, unnaturalistic colour, using techniques shared by Post-impressionist and Pointillist painters, such as the juxtaposition and combination of contrasting colours via optical mixing. The artist's brows are furrowed in a solemn expression and the contours of his body seem to have dissolved into the background, which is packed with similar brushstrokes. The image appears to have been painted over a textured base layer, giving the artist's facial features a gritty, granular surface texture. Painted in red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and black.

Condition
-
Red, black, and brown stains on the reverse suggest that the self-portrait was painted over an abstract, gestural painting. Nail along the left edge of the canvas. Craquelure. Paint flaking. Some of the staples used to secure the canvas to the stretcher are falling out. Very slight loosening of the canvas from the frame. In good condition overall.
