Description
-
With dry, sweeping downstrokes and brief, broken paint daubs applied using a small, round brush or, perhaps, the artist's fingers, this semi-abstract, naturalistically proportioned portrait depicts Tang Chang facing forward with a solemn expression and furrowed brows. The chemical composition of the oil medium has been manipulated so as to induce surface cracks, giving the image a fragmentary appearance that dissolves into abstraction when viewed up close. Vivid colours, including red, pink, orange, yellow, green, blue, and black, are juxtaposed against one another via the technique of optical mixing. Small slivers of canvas are left unpainted, creating highlights within the image.
