Description

Handfuls of thick, impasto black paint smeared, in forceful, sweeping, winding strokes, over a backdrop covered in textured daubs of white paint. Trace amounts of blue have been mixed into the black. The canvas is marked by tiny, splattered black dots and thin trails of paint. Parallel grooves are etched into the thick, almost sculptural surface using the artist's fingers, bearing witness to the vigorous, gestural painterly process.

Condition

Partially detached from frame. Handle with care. Large tears along the top and right edges measuring 7-8cm each. Craquelure. Small bits of paint flaking off. Tears at the corners. The canvas has pulled away from the stretcher, leaving holes along the edges where it was nailed to the stretcher. Stapled again along the edges. Discolouration; white paint appears yellowish-brown. Dust and dirt. A small hole near the top edge.
