This abstract, gestural painting consists of heavy, impasto handfuls of black paint smeared over a white backdrop in confident, sweeping strokes. Using his fingers, hands, and possibly arms, the artist creates marks of varying thickness, juxtaposing broad, calligraphic curves against groups of thin, playful squiggles.

Signed and dated "1960" on the reverse, along with "No 1." The "o" is underlined. Dated "1960" within the work, near the bottom right corner.

Condition
-
Tears at the corners. Holes at the top left and bottom left corners. Craquelure. Large chunks of paint flaking off. Dust and dirt. Discolouration; white paint appears yellowish-brown. The canvas has been stapled to the frame in addition to the original nails, which have rusted. A white spot near the centre of the work; possibly mould. Buckling due to the weight of the paint. White marks and traces of damage along the edges; possibly due to being stacked with other works.
