Description
-
With broken, gestural strokes and brief, impasto marks daubed onto the canvas in vivid, complementary colours—red, green, blue, orange, and yellow—this semi-abstract, expressive portrait depicts the artist wearing a hat and gazing directly at the viewer. The composition is cropped up close, and the paint has been applied in layers so as to induce cracks, creating a fragmentary pictorial surface that disintegrates into abstraction when viewed up close.

Condition
-
Brown spots (likely caused by a reaction between the chemicals in the paint and in the atmosphere). Some dust and dirt. Craquelure. Paint flaking and peeling off (may be part of the work). Insect remains stuck to the back of the canvas. The dimensions of the canvas are printed on the back of the wooden stretcher; the stretcher is covered in bits of paper which are peeling off. A logo which reads "artist" is imprinted on the back of the canvas. Dated "1987" on a piece of plastic corrugated board affixed to the right side of the frame.
