Description
-
Rendered in a photorealistic style, with smoothly blended brushstrokes and intricate details, this front-facing portrait depicts a moustached man dressed in black robes and a hat decorated with a single ornament—possibly the Chinese "melon rind cap" (瓜皮帽)—against a dark background. The wooden frame around the portrait is glided using small squares of gold leaf. The subject may be the artist's father.

Condition
-
Dust and dirt. Discolouration. Parts of the image, such as the buttons on the man's shirt, seem to have faded. Tears at the bottom right corner of the canvas. Buckling. A small hole near the top edge. Bits of the gold leaf affixed to the frame have flaked off onto the image. The canvas is not securely framed. Edges of the canvas are torn (visible on the reverse).
