A photorealistic portrait of a mature woman dressed in a green silk shirt with a mandarin collar and Chinese buttons, against a dark background. Her hair is combed back neatly and she wears gold earrings. While the woman's face is rendered in detailed, well-blended strokes, the highlights and tonal gradations on her clothing have been left partially unblended. The wooden frame around the portrait is glided using small squares of gold leaf. The subject in the portrait may be the artist's mother.

Discolouration. Brown stains along the edges of the work. Bits of the gold leaf affixed to the frame have flaked off onto the portrait. Cuts and paint flaking along the bottom edge of the canvas. Dust and dirt. Small holes at the top left corner and along the right edge.
