Description

This abstract, gestural composition consists of handfuls of black paint smeared over an uneven, blue-tinted white backdrop using the artist's fingers. Painted over a still-wet base in looping, winding movements, these strokes appear almost diaphanous, blurring into the background.

Dated "1960" within the work. Signed and dated "1960" on the reverse, next to the inscription "No 3". The letter "o" is underlined. An unclear number pencilled at a corner of the stretcher.

Condition

Craquelure. Paint flaking. Tears at the corners. Holes along the edges of the canvas, where it was previously nailed into the stretcher. Buckling. Dust and dirt. Thin brown lines (possibly a result of insect droppings). Canvas appears to have been remounted onto a new stretcher. The edges, which were previously painted black, are now visible within the frame of the composition.
