Description
-
An abstract, gestural painting executed predominantly in black, against a light-coloured background; smaller amounts of red and blue are mixed into the composition, which consists of chaotic, swirling, intersecting, overlapping strokes and scratch lines painted directly, using the artist's hands. Small bits of paint have been flung onto the canvas, leaving splatters, while gritty, granular lumps of paint, which were likely left to dry and coagulate before being applied onto the canvas, create lively, almost sculptural surface textures. Several dramatic cracks in the black paint reveal red beneath them.

Condition
-
Discolouration. Serious craquelure. Paint flaking. Dust and dirt. Tears at the corners of the canvas, where it was nailed into the stretcher. The tear at the top left corner seems significant. The canvas appears to be coming off from the stretcher (see left edge). Bits of plant matter are stuck to the surface of the work.
