Description
-
Thick, impasto handfuls of black paint are smeared over a light-coloured background in forceful, sweeping, intersecting gestural strokes strokes. Swirling, parallel lines have been scrawled into the medium using the artist's fingers, revealing the canvas beneath it while giving the surface of the work a sculptural character. Small bits of paint have been flung and splattered onto the work, while traces of red have been mixed into the black paint.

Discolouration. Dust and dirt. Insect and lizard droppings. Spiderwebs. Serious craquelure. Bits of paint flaking off. A tear in the upper left quadrant of the work which appears to have been patched up on the reverse; the patch is peeling off. Tears at the top left and top right corners of the work. Buckling and sagging, especially around the centre. Stains on the reverse.
