Discolouration of the canvas. Removed from the stretcher, resulting in holes and creases along the edges. Insect droppings. The canvas may have been prepared with gesso before it was painted. A layer of varnish appears to have been applied over the painting using a medium-sized brush, resulting in an uneven, woodcut-like gloss when viewed from an angle; the varnish has also affected the way in which the medium seeps through the canvas.
