Composed of quick, dry, gestural brushstrokes and thin, confident, curved pen outlines, the image depicts the Laughing Buddha (笑佛) in a simplified, minimal style reminiscent of Zen Buddhist art. Inscribed above the portrait are columns of flowing, gestural scribbles, and the word "laugh" (笑). Mounted on patterned paper, in the manner of a Chinese scroll.
