With broad, sweeping, wavy curves executed in a seemingly spontaneous, spirited fashion, the painting depicts a close-up, three-quarter view of the artist's face as he gazes into the distance. Columns of slender, calligraphic forms are superimposed over the image, blurring the lines between figuration and abstraction. Mounted on patterned paper, in the manner of a Chinese scroll.
