Zigzagging hatch lines, scribbles, and short, broken strokes composed in layers, forming realistic tonal gradations in a portrait of the artist staring straight ahead with exaggeratedly large eyes and a harrowed expression. His shoulders are bare and his hair is tied back. To his left and right, against a backdrop marked by light, gestural downstrokes, are verses of a poem lamenting the worthlessness of art and literature in terms of addressing social inequality.

Foxing. Creases along the bottom edge and at the top right and bottom left corners. Very light creases along the left and right edges. Tiny brown spots, possibly insect droppings. Fingerprints and smudges. Tape on the back. Marks on the back from heavy pen pressure.
